Error Message - Importing Excel to Access 2003

Hi, I am trying to import data from Excel 2003 into an existing table (with
no data) in Access. I have done this before and it worked fine although the
data was only two columns and up to 1676 rows. The data I am trying to
import is 30 columns and 543 rows.

I am getting the following message:

An error occurred trying to import file <whatever> . The file was not
imported.

I have been through and checked the field types in Excel match the field
types in Access. The column headings all match.

I have imported the data into a separate table and found that some of my
relationships with the original table were deleted, along with some other
tables (don't know if that is connected or not). This means I will now have
to re-establish the relationships and re-create the missing tables. I am
still wondering why it wouldn't work and why I lost some tables and
relationships.

So now I am totally confused I have trawled the Help file and this
forum and cannot find why this is not working.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Have you heard of this happening before?

Hi Kerry,
I suggest you import the data into a new table.
There are so many things that can go wrong with this import process.
The most common reason for a problem is with numbers that look like text -
for example serial numbers, telephone numbers.

One common workaround is to put 8 rows of dummy data in the first 8 rows of
the spreadsheet immediately under the headings.
Make sure that there are no empty cells in these first 8 rows.
Also make sure that numbers are real numbers - they shouldn't have any
leading zeros or anything that is not a digit in them.

Hi Jeanette,

Thank you for the respone - I think the 'leading zero' comment may have just
answered it. Some of the fields do have leading zero's.

I think the best option is, as you suggested, just import as a new tabel and
fix it from there.
