some of the users are getting an error i.e. "Excel cannot access'name.xls'.
The document may be read-only or encrypted." When they open word they get
"Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
(F:\username\...\foldername\name.doc)" These are in their home folders. One
of the things that I did change was I took ownership of their home folder
then gave it back to them.

Another user is having a differnt problem maybe related. I found a website
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx
she gets that error message and another message that has a lot chinese
charters in it then the last part of the name of a file on the server.

any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for post.

I understand you could not open worksheet and get the following error
message "Excel cannot access " name.XLS". The document may be read-only or
encrypted." If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me
know.

Before we go any further, please allow me to confirm with you the following
information:

1. Does the issue still happen to Word or other Office application files?
2. Which user created the worksheet?
3. Does the workbook exist on the network or the local disk? If the former
is the case, is there a Samba Server in your network?

Based on my experience, the issue may occur in several situations. Your
patience and cooperation are appreciated. Please perform the following
trouble shooting steps to narrow down the issue.

Step #1 Check in new workbook
==========================
Please try to create a new Excel workbook. Does the problem occur on the
newly created workbook? If not, the problem is specific to the original
workbook. Please send this workbook to me. I will perform some tests on it
and try to find a method to resolve the problem for you.

If the problem persists on the new workbook, please perform Step 2.

Step #2 Disable Anti-virus Software
===========================
Some similar issues were reported to be caused by anti-virus software, so
please first uninstall any anti-virus applications on your computer.

Note: In order to prevent virus attack during this process, please first
run a complete virus check and disconnect from the network before you
disable the anti-virus. You can reinstall the anti-virus software after our
troubleshooting steps.

Does this problem continue? If so, please perform Step 3. Otherwise, please
stop here and let me know the result.

Step #3 Excel Safe Mode
=======================
Safe Mode starts Excel as if it is starting for the first time after Setup
so we can exclude some customized factors. To run Excel Safe Mode:

a. Click Start->Run, type "Excel.exe /s" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box.
Note: There is a space between the Excel.exe and the /s switch.
b. Click OK to see if you can successfully start Excel.

Does the problem persist in Excel?

As a tip, you can try to change the name of the folder to resolve this
problem.:)

Please perform the steps at your earliest convenience. If you have any
questions or concerns, feel free to drop me a line. I look forward to
hearing back from you.

Have a nice day.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Jacky Gu
