Error when saving email

Dear all experts,

Occasionally, I want to edit an email in my inbox/sent items folder.
I keep getting an error:

'The item could not be saved because it has been changed by another user or
in another window.
Do you want to make a copy in the default folder for this item.?'

1. When I hit yes, my changes are gone?
2. What is meant by the default folder?
3. I only started getting this error message after upgrading to Outlook
2003.
