Error when using "Open data source".....

I have a .pub document that uses a database to fill in fields. In the past
this has worked perfectly, but now when I open the doc there is an immediate
error stating that mail merge cannot continue. In the mail merge menu the
option to cancel the merge is active. The file containing the datasource
(Access 2000) is not open. Any attempts to connect to any datasource are met
with the same error. ANd the problem is there if I start with a new, blank
document, too.

Access files open fine directly.

I cannot find any information on how to troubleshoot what looks like an ODBC
connection problem.

I have already used detect and repair on all my Office 2000 programs and
nothing has helped so far.

Thank you, Mary. I needed info from both of those knowledge bases to fix the
problem. The rest of my message is just a little more detail that might be
useful for you to have....

This was a much more detailed problem than what I originally thought. I
replaced all the named dll's and then downloaded and ran the MDAC Component
Checker. There were 2 other previously unidentified dll's that had later
versions than what were expected (mismatched, IOW). After finding them on the
Internet and installing them I was able to reconnect to the proper database
being called by Publisher for the mail merge.

By the way, the procedure the KB asked me to implement in VBA (creating a
new database in Access and refreshing all ODBC connections) did not work.
However, it did get me past the initial error to one that read "activeX
component cannot create object." That's when I figured that more dll's were
probably messed up.
