Errors with copy/paste

I am helping a friend - she gets an error when opening
Word 2000 saying "svchost.exe has generated errors and is
being closed by Windows". Word finishes opening but then
every file produces the error "This document could not be
registered. You will be unable to create links from this
file to other files." Then copy/paste functions don't
work. Is this a familiar problem? She is running Windows
2000 Professional. Thanksd for any help.
