Excel 2003 - bar chart - data source question

Hi - I've got an Excel 2003 Bar Chart that's currently being "fed"
with the data in a simple 2-column Table (Table 1) - column A is the
last day of a given month, and column B is the total number of Events
that happened in that month. The chart is simple: the X axis data
points represent the months, by last day, and the Y axis data points
represent the number of Events.

I want to change this.

I have a second, unrelated table (Table 2) from which I have been
manually extracting or deriving the data that I've been inputting into
Table 1. Table 2 is a multi-column list of Events. Most of these
columns are irrelevant. The column I'm concerned with, call it column
C, is the actual Date an Event occurred. I've been manually adding up
the number of Events within a given Month and putting that number into
column B of Table 1.

What I want to know is whether I can set up the Bar Chart such that it
looks to Table 2 directly, instead of to Table 1 for its data. I
would like it to "count" the number of Events that fall into a given
Month and update itself accordingly, rather than having to point it at
a static, manually-derived number of Events.

Does this question make sense? Can I do that?

Thanks very much.
