Excel Crashing constantly

F

Frukt

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I am running Excel 12.1.0 it crashes as soon as I move the mouse over the helkp menu or sometimes just randomly - every couple of minutes for some periods.

It starts up again and recovers my file, but as I am trying to save it it just crashes again - aarrggh.

I am using a Black Mac Book 2 Ghz intel core duo, 1.25GB of RAM. Running OSX 10.5.6

This is ridiculous and making it impossible to do any work.

Help!!

If you are actually still on the SP1 (12.1.0) update level it's no wonder
you're having stability problems - you've not applied the 6 updates which
have been released since that one.

In any of the Office apps go to Help> Check for Updates. Once Office is
fully updated run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions then restart your
Mac & see if conditions improve.

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion Bob - Updating from 12.1.0 is part of the problem. I have downloaded the 12.1.7 updater but it it won't recognise that the software is installed. I was on 12.1.5 previously when I first encountered the crashing problem so tried to reinstall Office.

I will definitely try the disk permissions first and try the update again.

thanks

You will probably need to consult the following page compiled by MVP Diane
Ross in order to address the issues you're now running into:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/update.html

Also - for future reference - reinstalling Office is *never* the approach to
resolving issues unless specific troubleshooting results point to that
solution [which is rare]. Especially if not done properly & preceded by
using the Remove Office utility - by the book - it will typically lead to
worsening the situation rather than improving it. At the very best it's a
time consuming waste of effort & necessitates reapplying all updates because
the reinstallation reverts to the prior level of what's on the CD/DVD.

Office 2008 installed and updated to 12.1.7 - however still running in to the same problems. ran disk permissions repair from an OSX leopard disk, no better.

Narrowing down the problem tho - to specific workbooks - new workbooks not crashing Excel. However, the problematic workbooks are fine when ran on other staff's computer's.

thanks again for your help.
