Exporting Reporting Services Excel file on a MAC

M

MacUser

I have a report that I have to render in Excel, I have created the report
using Reporting Services. When I try to open the output Excel file, I get the
Error message " Application Excel quit unexpectedly' and I am not able to
view the Excel file on MAC. Windows works just fine. The file size is only
about 100kb.

Any suggestions

Hi,

What is the file format that Reporting Services creates? Is it xls or some
other format.

What version of Excel do you use? Have you installed all updates for your
copy of Excel?

Does the exact same file cause a crash on any other computer besides yours?

Reporting Services created a .xls file on the mac machine. We have Microsoft
Office 2004 installed on the mac machine.

I get this error message "" Microsoft Excel has unexpectedly quit."

Using Reporting Services 2000.

If I export to Excel on my windows PC, open the file and save it and then
open in
Mac it opens without errors.
However if I just open the file without saving it does not open the .xls file.

When Reporting Services renders in Excel format, what version of Excel does
it use?
Is it the one installed on the client machine?

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

My guess is that the file created by Reporting Services is corrupt in a way
that Windows Excel doesn't notice but Mac Excel does.

However, it could be something on your mac totally separate from Excel
itself that needs attention. MVP John McGimpsey has a page of things to
check. You can read it here:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/troubleshooting.html

Start at the top of the list and work your way down trying after each thing
to see whether or not that changed the situation. I would add one additional
item to John's list. After "check your settings" I would run Alsoft
DiskWarrior version 4.

My hunch is that Reporting Services is creating a badly constructed file in
the first place. But you won't know for sure until after you've tested the
things in John's list. Excel 2004 is not known to quit unexpectedly very
often.

Jim,
I sent an email to (e-mail address removed) but it bounced back.

We decided to export the file as tab-delimited csv file. This is the url i
am using.

http://servername/ReportServer?/old...mand=Render&rs:Format=CSV&rc:FieldDelimiter=

But when I export this report on the Mac machine, it creates the file as
Rpt_Name.csv.txt

Why does it append the .txt? I just want it as an .csv file. Is there a
way that I
can just output the file with the .csv extension?

Thanks in Advance

I'm glad you were able to help out with this one. Thank you!

To be clear, the problem is with Reporting Services, not Excel.
