what the heck is the file extension for a Microsoft Word
file. I need to do a *.___ search for all word files and
all I see is the word icon.

You can choose to see file extensions in Word's Open and Save dialog and in
Windows Explorer windows. In Windows Explorer, choose Tools | Folder
Options. On the View tab, clear the check box for "Hide file extensions for
known file types."

Word will always recognize its own files no matter what the extension, but
unless there is a very good reason to change it (and I can't think of one)
then it is not a good idea to change the default setting.

Correction: Word will always recognize its own files provided you are
opening them through Word's File Open dialog. But Windows will not
automatically use Word to open them unless you associate your file extension
with Word (which you can do), and they will not be displayed in Word's File
Open dialog unless you display All Files.
