File Name

Something has happened where when I open a file, WORD
opens it but gives it a new name ie DOC1. I have spent
hours labouring over this to restore its normal operation
without joy. I have reloaded word and the operating system
but still the same thing happens. Please Help.

If you are opening files from Windows Explorer rather than from Word's File
Open dialog, it's possible that the file associations have become corrupted
such that Word is creating new documents based on your files (as it would
with a template) instead of opening the document.

With Word closed, press Start | Run and type:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash. Press Enter. Nothing
will appear to happen, but this will "reregister" Word (reestablish the
correct file associations in the Windows Registry).

If this doesn't help, then it's possible that documents have been saved as
templates but with the .doc extension. If that were the case, though, you
would be able to open them but could save them only as templates. When that
does happen, it is usually the result of a virus.
