File sizes in Word 2002 vs 97

I have an application that automatically generates reports in RTF format.
Until recently, I would open them with Word 97 to make some minor updates and
save as .DOC, which would reduce the file size slightly. Now that I have
upgraded to Office XP (Word 2002), when I save these files as .DOC, the file
size is significantly larger (4x larger or more). Even if I just open and
immediately save the RTF file, the size grows by about the same amount.

The files have no graphics, just lots of simple tables with Helvetica and
Arial text. I've verified that fast save is off, embed TT fonts is disabled,
and it's not saving versions. If I save in Word 6.0/95 format, the size
comes back to what I'm used to. Is there anything else I can do to get back
the compact file sizes, or is this just something I'll have to live with?
Unfortunately, 2002 is a current company-wide standard, so another upgrade
won't happen soon.

Thanks!
