Files change to hidden and read-only

When I save an excel or word file to my DVD-RAM multi burner disk, and then
open and close them, they become hidden and read-only. Can anyoone tell me
why this happens and a way to stop it? I am using MS Office 2003.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Don't open files on a CD/DVD drive, copy them to the HD first.
