Fix: Visio 2007 x64 Hangs During Database model Creation

I'm posting this here, so hopefully others will have an easier time finding
the solution than I did...

On Windows XP (x64) Visio 2007 hangs when I try to create a new database
model diagram. Performing a "repair" doesn't help at all.

For some reason, turning off the "Print Spooler" Service makes things work
just fine. I have no idea why this is, but it did the trick.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing this information. Do you see the hang when creating
other new drawing types? Does File > Print work for all the installed
printers on the system?

It's possible that the DB drawing type is determining how big to make the
page, polling installed printers and hitting a bad driver as some x64 print
drivers are a work-in-progress. thanks.

I had the same issue with *only* database drawings in Visio 2003 running
Windows XP x64 Pro. Turning off the print spooler service also fixed the
problem.

I have the same problem on Win2k3server x64 and Visio 2007 and I had the same
with Visio 2003.

Everything works fine except creating/loading a DB diagram. I set my
default printer to XPS printer cos I would expect that one to work.

To create a DB diagram I created a blank one then added the DB shapes. This
works and prints fine.

For some reason if the Diag is a true "db diag" then it just hangs and has
to be killed.

The problem also exists with Vista x64. I didn't try the print spooler
workaround, but creating a blank diagram and then opening the database
shapes worked for me.

This workaround did not work for me under Vista x64. With the Print Spooler
service off, my Visio 2007 still hangs when I try to create a new database
model diagram. I can create a blank drawing and open the database shapes,
but then I do not have access to the Database menu.
