Font changes in footnotes when pasting

I am copying text from one Word (Mac 2004) document to another and the font
changes in the footnote field and I cannot change it. For instance, in the
new document, I have pasted in some text and then I add a new footnote. I
then return to the old document and copy the text of the footnote and then
paste it into the new document. It then changes the font of the footnote
number from Times New Roman (set as my default) to Comic Sans. I have tried
copy all and then change the font to Times New Roman, but the footnote
numbers remain in Comic Sans. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Just to get our understanding of the scenario right, to save a lot of
irrelevant comment:

1. If you create a footnote and type in text, does it have the comic sans
problem?

2. If you choose Edit menu => Paste Special => Unformatted text to paste in
the footnote text, what do you get?

3. Does the problem only occur with pasting text from the one document?

Yes, even if I opened a new document. This comic sans appeared out of the
blue.

No, seems to happen no matter what document I paste from.

All this said, I did manage to fiddle with the formatting palette. I
highlighted the text of all footnotes and then choose Times New Roman. I
though things were OK, but know Word is unexpectedly quiting on my after
about 1 minute, 30 seconds. Took a look on the web--could this be some
corrupted font issue? Should I reinstall Microsoft Word 2004?

I normally write my word documents in English, but I am currently writing in
French, so I changed the language to French under the tools bar. The
document I was pasting from I made back in April 2007, so I cannot say why it
is now out of whack.

Thanks for the comprehensive information, Kate.

There are several elements in your problem. I'll help you to resolve the
aspect about your footnote style. I expect one of the regulars here who are
experienced in multiple language faults and crashing faults will come in to
help you with them.

You need to apply the changes you made to footnotes by amending the
"Footnote text" and "Footnote reference" styles. With your insertion point
in a footnote, choose Format menu => Style => click on the style => Modify
=> specify what you want, e.g. Times New Roman font => Add to template (keep
well away from "Automatically update") => OK => Apply.

For your future reference, although with ordinary text one can usually get
away with overlaying formatting manually as you have done (though it isn't
desirable for more complex or longer documents), Word will get the better of
you in more complex formatting such as footnoting. For longer and more
complex documents it's a good idea to learn about styles, which are at the
core of Word (if you do what's recommended in the previous paragraph, you've
just amended the definition of the footnote and/or footnote reference
styles).
