Hi Mary Ann,
There are several components involved in sending form results in a FrontPage
form via email:
1. FrontPage server extensions. As these have not changed, it is not likely
that they have anything to do with the delay.
2. Hosting web server. A web server is a machine or machines that hosts web
sites. If there is a lot of traffic coming and going to and from the web
server, this could slow things down. This happens when, for example, there
are too many web sites added to the server, or some software running on the
server consumes a lot of the machine's resources. It can also happen due to
anti-virus software on the server.
3. SMTP server. An SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server is software
on a network server that handles email, sending, transmitting, relaying,
etc. The same issues on that machine can cause its performance to degrade.
4. TCP Network. The Internet is an interconnected set of networks. If the
network that handles the traffic becomes too busy, this can slow down
performance for networked applications (its called "network latency").
5. Pop3 server. This is the final destination of the email. An email address
is always addressed to (e-mail address removed), in which the server part of the
address is the Pop3 (Post Office Protocol) server that stores the emails.
This sort of server can have the same problems as any other server, such as
those described above.
6. Email Client. This is the machine and software which fetches email from
the Pop3 server, and downloads it to the user's machine. If it is running
slow for any reason, it can cause a delay as well.
