format changes effect entire document

When I make a formating change (of almost any kind - even something as simple
as bold) it changes the entire document to that format. I believe I may have
changed a default parameter unknowingly that is causing this. Does anyone
know how to change it back?

Turn off "automatically update" in your style definitions, starting with the
Normal style. See
