It sounds like your copy of Office hasn't been updated in a while. This is
an issue that occurred in the initial release but was corrected by the SP1
(12.1.0) update... There have been 2 more updates since then.

Bring Office up to date, do the same for OS X if it's not at 10.5.4 & once
you repair disk permissions & restart see if the problem continues.

I have the same problems with the euro sign instead of the pound sign. I am using Excel 12.1.2 and MacOS X 10.5.5.

Actually your problem is completely different :) The OP is referring to
the number symbol (#), not the Pounds Sterling currency symbol (£).

The first thing to check, of course, is your settings in Format> Cells -
Currency & adjust as necessary.

If that's not the problem Quit Excel, then go to System Preferences>
International & change the Number format on the Formats page.

If that doesn't resolve it post a new message including your OS & Office
versions as stated here but also indicate Language of your copy, how you're
formatting the cells, etc. Keep in mind that if you're pasting data from
another source or if the file was obtained from someone else it could be
influencing the situation. Be as exact as you can with your details.
