Good Mail Goes Back to Junk

J

Jim

Dear All,

I'm having a problem with the Entourage 08 (12.0.1) Junk Mail
function; my junk mail filter is set to "High." However, several times
per day in my DotMac IMAP account, the same 5-10 sets of good email
gets transferred from my Inbox to the junk mail folder -- at least
some of these times, it is when the scheduled send/receive function
runs. (By "sets" I mean email messages from the same sender.)

This doesn't happen in my POP account. Further, I have set the address
or
the domain of these emails to "not junk," but this doesn't keep the
same
sets of email repeatedly going back into the junk folder. I don't
always "see" this happening, but when I notice that it has happened, I
have to spend time moving them back -- and they just go back into the
Inbox without presenting me with the "Junk Email Protection" dialog
box where I'd be asked which of the three choices to make to prevent
such mail from being classified as junk.

Do I have a bad setting or is this an Entourage bug?

Thanks,

Jim: 2008 Mac Pro Quad, Leopard 10.5.2

Check your IMAP rules.

Most likely bad settings.

Usually when mail gets moved, it's a rule that is moving the mail. The most
likely culprit is the Mailing List Manager (MLM). It's very easy to set up a
MLM rule by accident, when you are marking a message as 'not junk'. The
wording of that dialog is ambiguous to say the least. Check if there is an
MLM entry (look for MLM entries under the tools menu) with the incorrect
destination folder as the target folder. Mailing List Manager rules run
before your other rules.

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

Each type of account has it's own rules. Click on the correct tab to check
your rules. (Mail (POP), Mail (IMAP) Mal (Windows Live Hotmail) Mail
(Exchange), News, Outgoing)

See "Using Rules with Entourage" for help and examples:

May I jump in here? I am having a very similar issue. I have Entourage 2008 SP1 getting corporate mail from an Exchange 2003 Server on a desktop and laptop. On my desktop, which is running 10.4.11, a certain few individuals keep ending up in my Junk E-mail folder.

This happens in my mailbox and in a group mailbox for the Mac Support team I am part of. My Junk E-mail options are set to NONE. I have no MLM rules and no other rules. I tried adding our domain to the Safe Senders list, but that has had no effect.

Our Email Administrators don't know Macs so they are of no help.

It's always best to start your own thread. Please do so next time.
I am having a very similar issue.

Similar is not the same...this is why you need your own thread. Other people
researching the original problem will now have to deal with a similar
problem as well. Then if the original problem comes up you have a mix of
answers leading to confusion.

This sounds like the Mailing List Manager problem, but you say you have to
Mailing List Manager rules. Please check again to be sure. Messages don't
move my themselves. Usually a rule of some kind is moving the messages. Are
there any server rules that could be affecting those messages. Have you
checked the contacts in the Address Book to be sure they don't have Junk
assigned as a category?
