Has MS fixed the .xlsx Paper Size Bug?

R

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I started having a problem with a new printer and narrowed it down to when Excel 2008 saves in xlsx format, the paper size is set to "US Letter-Borderless". The Canon ip4700 printer I just got only prints "US Letter" size, so I changed the paper size and saved the document, however upon reopening, the change is not saved.

Came across this thread from a year ago http://www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Excel/4290/0
and was wondering if any fix has ever come through. I'm fully up to date with 12.2.4

Thanks for any response

Yes, this was addressed in the 12.2.0 update, IIRC. From your description of
the problem I believe one of two things may be causing it.

First, just because it's a new printer doesn't mean that the driver is the
most current... The printer may have been in the pipeline for six months or
more. Check the Canon site for a possible update.

Second, most printers will only accept the 'Borderless' setting if one of
the specific photograph-quality papers is selected. They don't do
edge-to-edge for anything other than photo printing.

Bob,

Thanks for your reply, however, there must be something else going on, since I'm on v. 12.2.4 of Office. I also had to download the printer driver from Canon because the CD couldn't be read and so have the latest driver.

I'm not TRYING to set the plain paper as borderless, however Excel is setting it to that when I save the file as .xlsx. If I save as .xls, I have no problem, but sometimes I must use the newer format and without the cumbersome workaround of constantly "saving as" and going back and forth am hoping for an answer.

Thanks again for all the help you give and I look forward to any other thoughts?

Hi Rich;

I'm not sure what else to suggest. Reports of this type of problem have been
practically non-existent since the 12.2.0 update. There was one issue posted
here last month where the file would not retain settings for Tabloid size -
the file continuously reverted to US Letter when saved in .xlsx format. The
OP never did mention what type of printer was involved, but did indicate
that the same problem occurred when the file was moved to a PC running 2007.
A test lead for MacBU was investigating the issue but I haven't heard
anything more. If I come up with anything I'll reply here.

Bob,

Again, I appreciate your replies.

Do you believe it would be of any help if I deleted the application and reinstalled and updated?

Thanks,

Not a chance :) That's a Windows hack that doesn't work for Mac Office &
most other complex Mac apps. Reinstalling Office is a last resort when *all*
else fails. If there is a bug in the software reinstalling just reinstalls
the bug. If the problem is with one of the support files (as it most likely
is) reinstalling won't touch it. Doing so may very well cause other problems
because the various bits can easily get out of sync. Besides, it doesn't
appear to be a universal issue... There just seem to be a few random
locally-based combinations that don't want to click - Unfortunately you
happen to be one of them.

If you're trigger happy to reinstall something it would be more appropriate
to uninstall/reinstall the printer and reapply the OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard)
COMBO Update:) Seriously, I'd definitely go that way if it were me.

Having moved two years ago from Windows to the Mac to avoid the scenario of uninstall-reinstall-clean install, I guess I haven't lost that reflex yet. I think I'll just let sleeping dogs lie and do the work-around when I must.

Thanks again for your wise counsel.
