Hebrew Suggestions

Dannyza

1. I have a document that is over 392 pages (550)
And Hebrew page numbering in microsoft Word 2002 does
not have the ability to go beyond 392 pages

2. The vav holams in vowel nikudos need to be put in the correct positions
without the spacing....

3. Right-to-left should be available in contextual menus - I keep on having
to change to Hebrew in the find and replace - which is really annoying

4. the Paragraph styles of justified, centred, left, and right are outdated.
We need more paragraphs styles of - justified witht the last line centred,
or right aligned, left aligned or fully lengthened. We should be given the
option of changing the amount of justification word uses.

5. Excel has some unique features - such as sequencing of dates and
numbering - automatically. It would be great if word was able to do the same
thing in tables. - I do calendars in word and its a pain to have to type in
dates manually.

6. Styles are a nightmare - why does word have to automatically add styles
and changes to styles as separate styles. Users need to be able to set
options that the styles remain intact and that word does not add styles nor
change set user styles without permission from the user. I set a document up
with styles and I change the fonts by accident or I add list numbering which
should be stylised in that style but instead, word simply adds another style.

7. Ability to change default table of contents - why does word automatically
set which headers to include. I have a document where heading 1 is not used,
yet it sets that as default for table of contents - annoying.

8a. headers and footers - A simple feature of matching a header to a title
of a section such as - Chapter 1 - with the header Chapter 1 should be a
simple button.
Also, why can't users set instead of list numbering - with a tab etc.
create a chapter sequence - such as Chapter 1 - 10 automatically at the
beginning of each section with customizable text?

8b. The ability to set which parts of headers should be continuous and
parts that are limited to each section - i have a document that has both -
and changing 206 headers every time I want to change something in a text-box
is ridiculous.

9. An English Calendar feature - as well as Hebrew and other languages
would be nice...

10. The ability to decide where footnotes can be - on the left or the right
or the center of a document. The ability to set end notes where ever - not
just the end of sections, but major sections...

11. Decent hebrew support with Hebrew spell checking with vowel (nikkudot)
insertion... The ability to change context-menus into Hebrew *and* English.

12. Word is being used increasingly as a way of publishing books. Make word
useful for these people - add features that book publishers use extensively.

13. Its about time word adds pdf conversion facilities.

14. Repagination gets out of hand - there should be a limit on the number of
consecutive repaginations.

15. Also in normal-layout view, there is no option to see the headers and
footers? - I want to see them, and edit them, without having to repaginate a
500+-page document every two-seconds - a waste of valuable time.

16. Why can't I use page-border art in normal borders around paragraphs?

17. Why can't I change and add other page-border/normal border art from my
own clipart collection?

18. I wish to change the background of pages in word - in different
sections - I want to add pictures etc. to fit the page behind the text - as a
cover page.

19. Word should have the ability to merge different documents in a simple
batch process, or to join and combine documents, as well as to separate the
quickly in a batch process.

20. Why can't I take my help pages and convert them to a single chm file
with a single click in word?

21. I want a set of Chapter titles Chapter 1 - 50 automatically added at the
begining of every section - without list numbering stylised in a header - it
should be a setting...

22. More control over things word does automatically.

23. There are massive bugs with page numbering and column sections - a
column section should not interfere with a larger section with page
numberings. I've had to redo entire documents without columns because word
messed up the page numbering - with no way of correcting the page numbering
in that section - the section changed with the setting "continue from
previous section" off, in a column for half a page and hence since there is
no way to change this, messed up the page numbering and headers half way in a
1200 page document.

24. Automatically save every 10 minutes, background saves and make a backup
at the same time is a problem? so why can't we have both options
simultaneously?

25. There has go to be a better way of transferring customized labels,
envelopes, page margins, paper sizes, and normal.dot features in a single
file for transferring to another computer?

Please fix these problems in word, its about time microsoft, writes a decent
program, if not I'll go out and buy davka writer.

Please, Dannyza, we are not Microsoft employees. Wish lists should be
reported to Microsoft. Microsoft empolyees may read these formus sometimes
and I hope some of them do, but this is a users forum, with some users
certified by Microsoft as all-knowing. Do some research on MS web site.

As to your wish list, some matters may be more complicated. I do not use
section breaks only and only to begin new chapters. Therefore, I do not want
unsolicited headings with numbers to appear. What's wrong with creating a
new numbered style?

A simple batch process to import 5 documents into an existing one would need
to indicated, which one is to be the first, whis is to be the second, etc.
and the settings stop being simple at all.

Etc. Etc.

Of course, these are general issues and not issues with producing Hebrew
textx.

John McGhie [MVP - Word and Word Macintosh]

Hi Danny:

OK, I have forwarded your list to the localisation people. Now: I
understand how satisfying it is to yell at Microsoft (do it myself, from
time to time...) and how good it feels to vent your frustration (even been
known to do that myself :))

However, just in case you wanted to achieve a bit more than zip as a
result, allow me to make some suggestions so you do not waste your time:

1) If you want someone to do something for you, it pays not to threaten
them :) So I took the liberty of removing your threat to buy davka writer
from the version I sent to Microsoft.

2) Threatening to buy a different product may not be a productive strategy.
To understand why, you may want to do the math from Microsoft's point of
view... Let me run you through the numbers. They currently sell
350,000,000 copies of Word each version, give or take. Each copy returns
them a profit of "maybe" 25 bucks (retail copies do a little better,
corporate copies a little worse). So: To solve all of your issues would
cost Microsoft several hundred thousand dollars (probably, more than a
million) and return it 25 bucks of extra profit. "Not" solving any of your
issues would cost Microsoft 25 bucks. Guess which one they're gonna pick?

3) Within Microsoft, each person is a specialist. Each of your issues will
be addressed by a different person. If you want action, when you send in
the feedback to Microsoft, send in each issue as a different suggestion.
That way, the intake staff can split them all up and send them off to the
correct people.

If you do not do this, the one person who gets your list will address the
one issue they are a specialist for, and throw the rest in the trash can.

Now: Some of your issues "may" be user error. Let's go through them and
see if I can help you with any of them:

1. I have a document that is over 392 pages (550)
And Hebrew page numbering in microsoft Word 2002 does
not have the ability to go beyond 392 pages

OK, the page counter in Word has a limit in all languages. Is the issue
affecting you on the printed page?
2. The vav holams in vowel nikudos need to be put in the correct positions
without the spacing....

You need to allow for the fact that the person who has to fix your issue may
not have your in-depth knowledge of the Hebrew language. Please provide an
example of what it does wrong, and what it should do instead, and if you
can, cite an authority that says what "correct" is.
3. Right-to-left should be available in contextual menus - I keep on having
to change to Hebrew in the find and replace - which is really annoying

Are you sure you have the Right - to - Left Input Method Editor installed?
Check the Help topic " Change the language of the user interface or Help in
Office programs" to make sure you have everything correctly set up.
4. the Paragraph styles of justified, centred, left, and right are outdated.
We need more paragraphs styles of - justified witht the last line centred,
or right aligned, left aligned or fully lengthened. We should be given the
option of changing the amount of justification word uses.

You can set up any paragraph styles you like in Word. Look up " Hyphenate
text" in the Help: by setting the Hyphenation Zone correctly, you ought to
be able to achieve what you need.
5. Excel has some unique features - such as sequencing of dates and
numbering - automatically. It would be great if word was able to do the same
thing in tables. - I do calendars in word and its a pain to have to type in
dates manually.

That's why they're separate programs. Microsoft Office "expects" you to
either paste an Excel spreadsheet into your document, or copy just the
section you need and paste it as a Word table. That way you get the
automatic series of Excel inserted into your document.

Check that you have the latest service pack applied. There was a bug in the
first version of Word 2002 that caused this behaviour. Having applied the
service pack, turn OFF "Keep Track of Formatting", "Define Styles based on
my formatting", and "Mark formatting inconsistencies" if you do not need
them. Keep track of formatting is what is causing the problem.
7. Ability to change default table of contents - why does word automatically
set which headers to include. I have a document where heading 1 is not used,
yet it sets that as default for table of contents - annoying.

Make sure you have set your Table of Contents Format to be "From Template".
Unless you do this, Word will ignore your TOC settings each time.

I strongly suggest that you ensure that Heading 1 is used if you are using
heading numbering in the document. If you do not use Heading 1, you will
get big problems with Heading Numbering. Obviously, you would redefine
Heading 1 to have the correct formatting.

You can, of course, deselect the options "Styles" and "TC Fields" when you
insert a TOC. Word will then not include any styles. But I think by
setting "From template" you will solve the problem, since Word ought to
store your setting for next time.
8a. headers and footers - A simple feature of matching a header to a title
of a section such as - Chapter 1 - with the header Chapter 1 should be a
simple button.

It is: Insert>Field...
Also, why can't users set instead of list numbering - with a tab etc.
create a chapter sequence - such as Chapter 1 - 10 automatically at the
beginning of each section with customizable text?

They can. Use Format>Style to modify the numbering for the Heading series.
You can customise the text that appears before the number.
8b. The ability to set which parts of headers should be continuous and
parts that are limited to each section - i have a document that has both -
and changing 206 headers every time I want to change something in a text-box
is ridiculous.

When you use the term "Header" I think you are meaning "Heading". Different
concept. Look up the "StyleRef" field in the Help: this enables you to
completely customise which parts of a heading are repeating and which parts
are not.

Do not use TextBoxes when you want to cross-refer into or from them. Text
Boxes are not part of the document text, and various reference features such
as Index, Table of Contents and cross-references do not work with them. Now
*I* think this is a bug, too. And I *did* enter it as a bug -- more than
five years ago :)
9. An English Calendar feature - as well as Hebrew and other languages
would be nice...

Yeah, wouldn't it... They purposely left it out trying to force us to buy
both Project and Visio. Look on the web, there are a wide range of choices
of add-ins that will do the job for you.
10. The ability to decide where footnotes can be - on the left or the right
or the center of a document. The ability to set end notes where ever - not
just the end of sections, but major sections...

You have these abilities. Footnotes are positioned by the Footnote style.
EndNNotes can be either at the end of the section or the end of the
document. Look up the Help to see how.
11. Decent hebrew support with Hebrew spell checking with vowel (nikkudot)
insertion... The ability to change context-menus into Hebrew *and* English.

I didn't understand the first sentence (sorry!). The second ability you
should have if you have a Hebrew version installed.
12. Word is being used increasingly as a way of publishing books. Make word
useful for these people - add features that book publishers use extensively.

Yes. I know. I do publish books from Word regularly. Which features do
you need that you currently do not have? Maybe I can help you find them.
13. Its about time word adds pdf conversion facilities.

Microsoft agrees :) PDF will be in the box for the next version of Office.
14. Repagination gets out of hand - there should be a limit on the number of
consecutive repaginations.

You can control it: Work in Normal view. Normal View is designed for the
likes of you and I, who know what we are doing and are handling long
documents. In Normal View, pagination will occur only when Word needs to
regenerate page numbers. Page Layout View was added for people who do not
handle long documents and maybe do not have a professional's working method.
These people like to see What You See Is What You Get permanently, and
consequently Word must repaginate the document for every insertion or
deletion in order to get Page Layout View accurate.
15. Also in normal-layout view, there is no option to see the headers and
footers? - I want to see them, and edit them, without having to repaginate a
500+-page document every two-seconds - a waste of valuable time.

Correct: Until the document is paginated, the headers and footers do not
exist. The headers and footers are not part of the document text, they are
generated from a separate text flow, only at output time. Get your headers
and footers correct at the top of the document where Word can repaginate
very quickly. Once they're right, they will stay that way.

I only ever touch the headers and footers once or twice in the entire
production process for a document. If you are having to edit headers and
footers more often than that, you have missed StyleRef: look it up in the
Help.
16. Why can't I use page-border art in normal borders around paragraphs?

You really want to know? Page border art is generated as a floating layer
beneath the text. It exists in a separate Story which is inserted in the
display during pagination for output. Paragraphs are part of the main text
story. So: The two are not part of the same object.
17. Why can't I change and add other page-border/normal border art from my
own clipart collection?

You can, but you need to convert them into Microsoft Publisher Border
format. They are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\BORDERS
18. I wish to change the background of pages in word - in different
sections - I want to add pictures etc. to fit the page behind the text - as a
cover page.

That's easy -- Have you read the Help at all?? Check the help topic
"Position graphics and text"
19. Word should have the ability to merge different documents in a simple
batch process, or to join and combine documents, as well as to separate the
quickly in a batch process.

It has. Check Insert>File to combine them, and check the help topic
"Combine or split subdocuments" to see how to divide a document. Note: Do
not use Master Documents for any OTHER purpose than splitting up documents
or you will get into horrible trouble :)
20. Why can't I take my help pages and convert them to a single chm file
with a single click in word?

Because Microsoft makes a Help Compiler for the purpose. Download the HTML
Help Workshop for free from www.microsoft.com. To make Help from Word, use
a master document (ON a COPY!!) to split your mmanual up, then Save As "Web
Page (Filtered)". Run the results of that through the Help Compiler.

If you want it all to happen with one click, buy a copy of RoboHelp Office.
21. I want a set of Chapter titles Chapter 1 - 50 automatically added at the
begining of every section - without list numbering stylised in a header - it
should be a setting...

That's what you are going to use your uniused Heading 1 style for, right?
22. More control over things word does automatically.

Coming: See the next version of Office.

Well, OK, but if you found it quicker to re-do an entire document than read
the help topic " Specify how to start or restart page numbering" then you
have an interesting working method and perhaps Word is not suited to your
purposes ...
24. Automatically save every 10 minutes, background saves and make a backup
at the same time is a problem? so why can't we have both options
simultaneously?

You can (and should) specify all three options. It's "Allow fast saves"
that you should not use -- it's an old file writing method that is not
suitable for modern computers. Don't use it or you will corrupt your
documents.
25. There has go to be a better way of transferring customized labels,
envelopes, page margins, paper sizes, and normal.dot features in a single
file for transferring to another computer?

There is: It's called the Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
Please fix these problems in word, its about time microsoft, writes a decent
program, if not I'll go out and buy davka writer.

Hmmm... You posted 26 issues. By my count, the fixes for 23 of them are
built right into the product and described in the Help. Could it be
suggested that while there is clearly an opportunity to improve here,
"Microsoft" may not be the one with the greatest need to improve?

Sorry: Couldn't resist :) If you really "want" help, we're here to make
sure you get it. If all you want to do is complain about the difficulties
you are having because you won't read the help, then enjoy...

Cheers
