extend the notification system to do things other than email -- for example,
send data to a message queue.

I am not aware of a way to use the notification system to send data to the
message queue, but you can use triggers. Adding triggers to the
msp_web_work, msp_projects, msp_tasks, etc. is a great way to extend the
capabilities of the system with additional functionality.
