How can I convert an excel file into a word document?

I assume you have some reason for not using Excel to edit the Excel document.
Info copied from Excel will be pasted as a Word table by default when pasted
into a Word document.

If you don't have Excel and are trying to open the file in Word, you need to
File|Open as usual. When you navigate to the correct folder, click the
"Files of Type" dropdown at the bottom of the Open dialog box. Select "All
Files (*.*)" .

Select the Excel document and hit Open.

A couple of caveats - Word is not set up to interpret multiple sheets from
the same workbook; you will have to choose one sheet to be opened - there
will be a pop up box for this. Secondly, Excel tables can be quite huge, and
you may not be able to set the Word paper size large enough to display all
the information.

I have Word 2003 but can't open an Excel file. Where do I get the filter for
doing so? Is it part of a particular download?

There is a filter linked from the downloads page of my web site which should
do this, but some users have reported that it doesn't work for them.

Is this a "bug" in '03?
I wonder because the help screens and user interface all imply that it
still can be done. I found out-the hard way- that the xl converter was
missing when I was testing my vba routines for our '97->'03 conversion.
A few macro's were using the "InsertFile" function and they bombed. I
had to create an xl instance and use "PasteFromExcel" (i.e.. I needed a
whole routine to accomplish what I had been doing with one command).
I found the problem by using the interface and it all went as usual
until the final command, whereupon it became evident that the converter
was not present (an even easier method to find the problem was simply to
use Word's "Open" command and note that the "XLS" was not present).

It is not a bug, but a response to constant complaints about security. Many
of the older filters have been removed or replaced.

Gee, wish they'd said that rather than leading me to believe that I was

The program has been updated (by the latest service pack), but the Help has
not.

I tried the filter, it brought the spreadsheet into Excel 2003 but the
formatting of the columns was lost. I can't seem to find a newer excel
convertor on Microsoft's site? Does anyone know of one?

This was the last filter that did what you want. Later filters (like the one
included with the application) have the function disabled. The only
alternative is to use copy and paste special to insert the sheet.

Since I don't know what version you have, I don't know what the latest SP#
is.

OK. I have copied an excel spreadsheet and then pasted it into word 2003 --
no paste special option is available. But word does the pasting, some of the
columns come out super wide. Can I adjust these in Word? Up where the ruler
is in Word, there are little squares. If I place my sursor over these, they
say "table columns" But when I try to drag them, after I let them go, they
snap back to original positions. Is there a way to adjust these, to bring
the columns back to original widths like there were in Excel?

Paste special is (or should be) on the edit menu. Paste in html format and
the target will match the source exactly.
