How can I start an application from an html page?

I use my home-made home page as my desktop in Windows XP Home. Right now I
have to have a little strip of normal icons to run applications. I would
like to do away with the icons and run the applications (my computer, recycle
bin, etc.) using html in the same way I link to other pages and the internet.

For security reasons you normally can not launch an application from a web browser
On your PC you might want to look at HTA's
