How do I allocate tasks individually and still summarise a group of people in MSproj 2000

Please can someone help, I've tried for days to sort this..

I''m building a program plan for a team of designers to allocate them to
projects/tasks, and to identify if we need more people.
Tasks have to start on fixed dates so I need to predict people numbers
needed each week.

I want to put designer's names against their tasks and get a resource graph
for them individually , and also for the group.

ie I want to get a graph showing
"Albert is commited 0.75 of his time in Nov, 1.25 times in Dec...
Brian is commited 0.9 of his time in Nov, 1.1 times in Dec..."
.....etc

AND ALSO
"We need 3 designers in Nov and 5 in Dec..." i.e. showing the need greater
than supply.

IF I assign all tasks to a resource called "designer" and have unlimited
resources then I get the picture from "resource graph" of how many
designers needed overall. But no way to record who does what task in the
Gannt chart.
OTOH, If I assign tasks to each person by name then I can try to put them
into a "designers" Group but there's still no way to get it to draw a
graph of the group..

What's the proper way to do this? (Using MS project 2000) .

Thanks,
Keith

PS typical task might be for a designer to do a 3 weeks worth of work design
over elapsed time 6 weeks at 0.5 utilisation . The elapsed time is constant
due to the need to consult with others.

...ansswering my own post to save others time:
item 38 on page
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm
gives me what I need if I set a Dummy "Designer Needed" resource with zero
units. And use a split view.

Then I can just either select a person, a group of people, and the graph
updates with any shortfall shown as overallocation of "Designer Needed".

That's a fine FAQ, will save me many hours of work.
