How do i change the way word starts?

Everytime i start word, text from a old document would come up in the message body instead of a blank document. I click on new blank document and the old text still shows up. It also carries over to outlook 2003 when i click on new message.The document itself has been deleted from my harddrive and removed from my recycle bin. But for some reason it just wont go away. does word have a cache that needs to be cleared? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you
