So you're trying to work out the difference between pasting it into Word
when Word is running and pasting it into Word when Word is running? Tricky.

Did you ever get a usable response on this? It happens to me on one of my computers, not the others. Grrr

How can you paste something in Word if Word is not running? What am I
missing?

Smokey,

Try this:

Copy your text, switch to Word (assuming you want it open to paste into),
click the "Edit" menu, select "Paste Special", and select the "Unformatted
text" option. Still got an icon?

Hi again,

Do you mmean:
<Quote>
When I cut from foreign source (such as an Internet page,
or a different program) I cannot paste in Word 2003
unless I have the program open first.

It is as if the act of opening Word 2003 deletes whatever
is on the clipboard, as I am able to paste my item on any
number of other programs (Excel, Quark, etc.) which were
not open beforehand, but as soon as I open Word the paste
is gone (and then I cannot paste it anywhere else
either).

This was not a problem in Word 97.

From a post (Re: Can't paste from foreign sources) in the
public.word.customization.menutoolbars NG.

If so, here is what Klaus Linke suggested, and the original poster said that
it solved his problem:

Hi Rocky,

Probably some add-in messes with the clipboard, most likely the Works
add-in.

If it is the Works add-in, you can remove it from the Windows Control Panel
Software.
IIRC, it doesn't really serve any purpose that would atone for the troubles
it causes.

Greetings,
Klaus
