How do I reference a graphic from a document?

I want to reference a graphic on a document, but when I copy it to the
clipboard and then try to paste it using Edit > Paste Special, it will not
let me link it. The "link" option is greyed out. The only way that I can do
it is to insert the graphic using Insert > Object, which takes a bit longer.
Any ideas on why the first way is not working?
Thanks!

'Linking' as referred to here is used to get an image displayed in a doc
_without_ having the entire image file stored in the Word file. Most commonly
used for large, high res graphics and/or in docs where a lot of images are
used, in order to keep the doc file size smaller. The link remembers where
the graphics are so the full image content can be directed to the printer
when you print the file (Word only stores a low res version for screen
display).

To use Linking you have to link to a _file_ not a copy of its content from
the Clipboard.

If you can be more specific about what you mean by "reference a graphic",
perhaps there are some alternatives to offer.
