How do I set a task as cancelled w/o deleting it in Project?

I need to mark a listed task as cancelled but don't want to delete it as I
need a visual representation of it in the schedule. How do I do this in
Project 2003?

You could just change it to a unique color and make sure it's not
linked to any other task. Strange, but possible. And Project will still
see it and number it as a task.

Hope this helps in your world.

One approach I ahve used is to edit the Task Name by inserting "CANCELED - "
at the beginning. Then I change the Duration to 0d (since it is no longer
going to consume resources time).

There are 2 cautions though.

1. If there has been progress recorded against the task, do not change the
Duration to 0d; instead change the Work to equal the amount of work already
recorded against it).
2. You eventually want to show the task as complete, but you have to be
careful of when you mark it complete. If it has a predecessor task, mark it
complete only when the predecessor is complete so that the dates for any
successors remian accurate. Or you can remove any linkages to other tasks
so they are not affected and then mark ti complete.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I was hoping there was a status marker in Project but this'll get the
job done.

Hi realitygames,

In addition to the good suggestions from Dave and Wiley, you may use one
of the Flag fields to indicate whether the task has been "cancelled" or
not. Set the flag to "yes" for tasks that have been cancelled and then
you can use filters to hide the display of those tasks from view. I
would also second Wiley's suggestion of setting the duration to zero.
You could also alter the format of the Gantt bar for tasks where the
Flag is set to yes if you still want to show the tasks in the Gantt
chart, but have them stand out some more.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
