Is there a way to stop the email icon from appearing in the system tray when
the only messages that have arrived have been filtered and are sent to the
delete folder?

The notification icon appears when new e-mails are received and before
any rules have been exercised against them.

What version of Outlook? Do you mark them as read in the rule?

No, I'm not sure how to do that. I have all my spam and junk mail being
delivered into the delete folder.
Can I create a rule to just mark them all as read immediately? By the way,
I received a notice of this
reply from you, but the link didn't work. I'm using 2007.

Use a real newsreader to read this newsgroup and you won't have that problem
again.

First, I don't understand your reference to "spam and junk mail". Spam *is*
junk mail. The two terms mean the same thing. Also, are you not using
Outlook 2007's Junk E-mail filter? That should take care of a lot of the junk
you receive without you having to resort to rules. Since the Junk E-mail
filter runs early in the receiving time frame, messages moved by it to the
Junk E-mail folder will not trigger the New Message icon. In fact, messages
you move via rule to another folder should aldso not trigger the New Message
icon. This has been the case since Outlook 2003 SP1.

The "mark as read" action is in the same list of actions as the "delete it"
action. Just check that action as well.

Rules are generally not a good way to handle junk e-mail. They're such moving
targets that your rules will become fairly ineffective quickly becase spammers
modify their techniques constantly. However, if you've found a new effective
rules, good for you.
