How do open a newer .doc file in office 2000

I have Office 2000 in XP Pro and I am trying to open a .doc file that I
assume is from a newer version of Office. There are errors on the page. I
have downloaded the Office updates and convertors from the office website,
but I still get errors. What next?

Hi, Matt,

The file format is basically the same. What errors are you getting? Could
it be that the document is corrupt?
