how do you edit text in a bmp file?

I've scanned several documents into the computer and now need to edit those
documents. They contain mostly text ...a few also contain an inserted
picture. How do I edit the text, spacing, etc in these files and also is
there a way to edit the inserted picture?

Use OCR software. It may have come with your scanner, or was included
with Office XP or 2003. If no OCR software, then no test editing until
you get it. Also it will no longer be a .bmp file, but will need to be
saved as a Word document.
