How do you place a shape and still see the behind

When I place a square on my document, it hides the numbers behind it. What I
want to do is place a letter or number in a square but when I put the square
on the numbers or letters it covers them up, and I can't see what's under
them anymore.

Right-click on the shape and select Format AutoShape. On the Lines and Fill
tab, set the fill color to No Fill.
