I am inserting an object (Visio diagram) in my Word
document so that updates to the Visio diagram are
automatically reflected in the Word doc. I clicked Insert
Edit > Paste Special > Paste Link (bug is found if the
Visio diagram is on a file share; you can't insert it -
the option for Paste Link is grayed out).
This Insert > Object workaround works fine, HOWEVER, my
Visio file has multiple tabs on it. How do I distinguish
which tab I want to embed?
If the Paste Link method worked, I would be able to copy
exactly what I wanted from the appropriate tab, then paste
it in...but it doesn't.
Read the background below for more information on the bug.

Hi Kim
I think you will make a good Tester
Using Insert \ Object \ Create from file and check the "Link to file" should
work.
The Visio file can be stored on a server and the Word doc can link to it.
If the Visio file has changed, re-open the Word doc again.
Word will ask if you want to update the linked document. Say Yes and the
embedded Visio link will be updated.
Hope this helps

Kim M. said:I wanted to link a Visio file to my Word doc. I want the
Visio diagram to appear in the Word doc, and reflect
changes any time the source file is updated.
I followed the Word Help file, step-by-step.
1. Open the file that contains the information you want
to create a linked object or embedded object from, and
then select the information.
2. Click Copy.
3. Switch to the Microsoft Word document, and then click
where you want the information to appear.
4. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
5. Click Paste Link. - this is where the problem is -
it's grayed out!
However, Paste Link is available when the file you're
linking to is on your hard drive. When the file you're
linking to is on a file share, the option is grayed out.
I MUST keep my file on the file share, however.
I believe this is a bug. Can someone confirm?
There is a workaround that is to embed the Visio file as
an object in the Word doc.
1. Click in the document where you want to place the
embedded object.
2. On the Insert menu, click Object, and then click the
Create From File tab.
3. Navigate to the file name, then click Insert.
4. Click Link to File.
The "result" explains what will happen:
"Inserts the contents of the file into your document and
creates a shortcut to the source file. Changes to the
source file will be reflected in your document."
This is exactly what I want; however, updates to the
source file are NOT reflected in the document. I tested
it.
I believe this is a bug as well. Can someone confirm?
Any advice for another workaround?
