I am having the same problem. The slide will update automatically until I
save the file.

After that, it will only update when I select the excel chart inside the
power point presentation.

Insert the excel file as an object.
From the "Insert" menu select "Object", select the "Create from File" button
and when the window changes select the "Link" button.

Browse and choose the file you wish to insert and choose "OK" PowerPoint
will now update the information if the excel file has changed when you open
the .ppt file.

Hope that helps

I just think this is a bug. I am using Excel and PowerPoint 2002.

I inserted an Excel worksheet object, then I selected the dats I wanted from
an Excel spreadsheet and copied and pasted special as a link.

It will update automatically whenever the excel file changes until I save
the powerpoint presentation.

I even went to the Edit .. Links menu and selected Startup Prompt ... and
then checked "Don't display the alert and update links" and saved the file
and reopened it.

It STILL will not update the links until the excel object is selected.

Any help appreciated.

Solved the problem by pasting the cells in as a link.

It will now prompt me on file open to update the links. This caused another
problem. I can't format the cells separately from the original Excel file, so
I made yet another link to a special page in the original Excel document and
formatted it with the colors and size fonts needed for the presentation.
