How to open HTML files composed by Word 2003?

Hi:

I am experimenting an email newsletter with FP 2003, Word 2003, and using
Outlook 2003 for email client.

I found out that HTML files composed by Word 2003 (with HTML extension) can
only opened by Word 2003, that is even you tried to open it with FP 2003,
Word 2003 would jump out to open it, and it is also true for vice versa, and
that is HTML files composed by FP 2003 with be opened by FP 2003 only.

Is there a way that I can just use any client to open it since the two both
support HTML files, instead of using the original one?

I am trying to use FP 2003 to do the template and using Word 2003 to edit it
a bit but more importantly to use the mail merger function to distribute the
email newsletter.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi:

Thanks for your kind reply.

I've tried to uncheck both the selections, Check if Office is the default
.... and FrontPage is the default editor.

But still won't work. Only FP will open the pages initially saved by FP,
and that is even I use Open in Word 2003 to open the file, FP will jump out
to open it.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi:

The problem has been solved and share with those who may be interested.

Basically, the problem can be solved with two approaches:

(1) Remove program-specific meta data: I've tried several times, and proved
both meta have to be removed. After that, it can be opened with Word.

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 6.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

It is also true for vice versa, if HTML files were initially saved by Word
and wish to be opened by FP 2003.

(2) Alternatively, it can be done by setting Word as the default HTML editor
although it is not my purpose. It can be done at Tools\Options\General\Web
Options and select Files, and check both the default editor selections which
are also available from FP 2003 (but need to uncheck the default editor for
FP 2003 if selected Word as the default editor). This approach will
permanently select Word as the default HTML editor even the above meta files
remained.

But I don't know if there are any averse effects for removing the above
meta, and appreciated if anyone can tell me.
