i have files created on a friend's maching with publisher 2003. i have
publisher 2000 on my machine, and am unable to open the files. receive
message to the effect that "publisher can't open files from a previous
verison".

Your friend can save the document as a 2000 file. Have her/him resend it to you.

actually, i already did, and thought i was scathingly brillant.
unfortunately my brillance has dimmed as the new files keep freezing
publisher.

does this simply come down to "bite the bullet and get the upgrade"?

If you are going to be dealing with Pub 2003 files and your computer
meets/exceeds the system requirements, then yes, it's time.

Disable the printer too, or better yet try opening the file in safe mode.
Publisher saves printer information and the file might be looking for a driver
you don't have.

DJG -

Can you send the file to me? Let me see if I can open it. I have Pub 2000,
2002, and 2003. If you can/will, send it to jl dot paules at gmail dot com.

thank you so much for your offer. after my last post office depot became the
proud recipient of my money. will install the upgrade this morning and
hopefully all will be fine.

again, thank you all for your input.
