Baseline columns only ever change when you make manual edits or select
Tools, Tracking, Save Baseline.
Hover your mouse over the column heading: I suspect you have a column named
Baseline Finish but in reality it's a different column altogether and not
the real Baseline Finish column.
Rod Gill, you're correct in there being separate columns and MIcrosoft's help
states, the items change automatically - but can't find anything that tells
me how to stop the dates matching while I purposely want the to maintain
reference for the differences.
Thank you.

My guess is that you've mistaken the "Start" and "Finish" fields as the
baseline. Those fields change when you enter Actuals. In order to
create a true baseline, you have to baseline the project by doing a
"Tools, Tracking, Save Baseline". There are several options in that
dialog box, but once created, the Baseline Start and Baseline Finish
dates won't change unless someone manually edits them or re-baselines.
Hope this helps in your world.

What are the names of the columns you want to stop changing dates for? You
must hover your mouse over their column titles to see the real column name.
I have saved my baseline Tools>Trackig>Save Baseline correctly.
I have verified that the column headings are truly "Finish" and "Actual
Finish"
How do I prevent the Finish date from changing when I enter in a date in the
Actual Finish field?
There are three Finish fields
Finish: Stores the projected finish until the task is done, the actual
finish after it's completed
Actual Finish: Reads "N/A" until the task is done, actual finish after.
An entry here with also drive the "Finish" field to update
Baseline Finish: Stores a copy of whatever was in the "Finish" field
when the baseline was saved.
