Huge file size after converting to pdf

TM

We converted a publisher file to pdf and the file size went from 17 Mb to 83
Mb. This may be an acrobat question, but what experience has everyone had
converting to pdf?

Thanks,
TM

Well, if you are linking graphics in Pub rather than imbedding them (linking
is best) then your Pub file size will be small compared to a high rez PDF
(print or press optimized) because the PDF contains all graphics and fonts.
If you are PDFing for the web, then you wll want to downsample the graphics,
or set distiller to web optimized.

That for starters. More informaiton will be helpful.

Publisher embeds copies of all graphics, even if they are linked.

Check your JobOptions in the Distiller.

That depends the quality of the output you want.
I'd say Print, but EBook may be good enough for you - depending on the
purpose of the output

Some files grow, some shrink, though usually not at the levels you
experienced.

A good question is what you are going to do with this pdf? Post it on
the web, share it with someone to check, have it printed commercially?
There are different levels you can change for down sampling images and
lineart; the selection will depend on its use. Also, if you use a lot of
different fonts and choose to imbed them, the file size can balloon.

Also, CMYK pdf files are usually lots larger than the native file.

That is incorrect. If the graphic is linked, publisher imbeds a low rez
screen preview, not the full graphic.

Example: I have 2 publications. One in which I embedded the photo, the other
I linked the photo. The embedded Pub file is 2,078kb. The linked Pub file is
only 158kb.

I really don't know why Pub embeds by default. Embedding just eats up disk
space quicker. Portability is taken care of with the Pack and Go feature.
The only time it doesn't make a big difference is when creating for the web,
where the actual graphics are probably no bigger than the placement images.
This is one big problem I have with the program. Pub has come such a long
way, so it's sad to see something like that. PageMaker gives the option in
the defaults and on-the-fly, depending on settings. Higher end programs --
Quark and InDesign -- don't embed at all.. (unless it is copied form the
clipboard - bad idea).
