I can't open any office programs or files.

last monday my computer started freezing up.
now I can't open any office programs or files. I click on the program icon
and nothing happens.
my comupter has automatic updates for windows xp, internet explorer 6,
office xp professional, and norton antivirus 2003.
could an update have caused this?
