This sounds like you need to upgrade your graphics card driver. This isn't
uncommon when upgrading to a new version of Word. Meeting people's
expectations for what Word should do on-screen puts a lot of stress on the
graphics card driver
Go to the manufacturer's website and update to the newest version.

FWIW, there have been quite a few discussions that
suggested turning down the hardware acceleration
(at least as far back as Word 97 <g>). Word is
a good test of the capabilities of graphics drivers,
basically doing a constant update of the screen for
a changing document mixing graphics and text fonts
that are controlled by styles, layout options and
a number of settings within Word and with possible
influence from 3rd party programs and utilities running
all on a moving Windows baseline
If turning down the acceleration does work then
checking the PC, graphics card and graphics card
chipset manufacturer's websites for software/firmware
updates is a good step, although the updates sometimes
take a while to be tested and released.

Control Panel | Display | Advanced | Troubleshooting. Also visit
your graphics adapter manufacturer's website and look for an
updated driver for your graphics adapter.
