Images disappeared in Publisher 2003

P

Paul P.

I am creating a Publisher document and was on page 6 when I opened the file
and saw that my imaged do not show up. I can click on an area and have the
frame show around where the images used to be but nothing else shows. I've
ensured that the order of objects isn't incorrect. I also checked the
graphics manager. It says that no images are missing. All images are embedded
not linked. I've spent hours searching through the help section but cannot
seem to get my images to reshow. I've even used the "repair" feature in hopes
that it would solve things ... but it didn't.

How can I get my images to show back up?

Well it appears that I am not the only one who has experienced this problem!
I saw and read Bivvyman's post below and went through the things Ed Bennet
reccomended. After the installation of the newest video driver and even
upgrading to Direct X 9.0c the problem wasn't resolved. When I started in
Safe mode and viewed the Publisher file all of the graphics showed up. I
emailed Intel (graphic card manufacturer) and am waiting for their reply.

The strangest part is that graphics show up when I create a new document
from a template. The graphics disappear only after saving a file, closing the
app and then reopening it.

I'll let everyone know if Intel resolves the issue.

Regards,
Paul

Yes I tied that. I tried all three view options hoping to jump start the
images again but nothing wored.
Even the lines and gradients that came as part of the template have
vanished. The only thing showing is text. It's very frustrating especially
since I had created mutiple pages before this occured.

Paul

Try in safe mode, if it works then you should upgrade your video driver. Go to the
manufacturer's web site and look around for a download.

I quote your description of the problem: "I can click on an

Click on the text box, choose Order from the Arrange drop
down menu, and click on Send to Back.

To all who have responded to me problem:
Please read both of my posts before offering further assistance. I
whole-heartedly appreciate any asisstance you offfer, but if you'll read both
of my initial posts you'll see that I've already taken the steps that have
been suggested thus far. To recap: I have determined that it is the video
driver (images appeared in safe mode). The order is not screwed up (all
pictures are on top). I do not have the images set not to show either. I ahve
downlaoded and installed the lastest video driver from Intel.

As stated I have contacted Intel regarding their driver and am awaiting word
from them. If you can think of something else not covered already (to include
original two posts from me) please do let me know.

Regards,
Paul

Until Intel have fixed their drivers, have you tried turning down Hardware
Acceleration?
I don't see you mention this anywhere - it might work as an alternative to
safe mode, at least in the short-to-medium term

Here's what the Intel people said:

<BEGIN PASTE>
I just tried to duplicate this issue on the Intel(R) 82915G Express Chipset
Family and was not able. I suggest contacting the developer of the
application for additional information.

This type of issue can be caused by an error or problem in the operating
system or the application. I suggest reinstalling the application after all
the graphics controller updates. If this makes no difference, please test
running a clean installation of your operating system and make sure you
install all necessary chipset and device drivers in their correct order
<END PASTE>

I believe they're correct when they state that it is a Publisher problem as
opposed to a graphics card issue ... and here's why.
I use computer graphics software daily from the mundane to the advanced 3D
types. MS Publisher is the ONLY program that I'm receiving errors in.

In addition to this I find it extremely unusual that I can open a template
in Publisher and be able to view all graphics fine ... that is until I save
it, close Publisher, then open the saved file again. At that time every
single graphic from lines to pictures, to clipart vanishes though their
frames remain.

Any other guidance from the field on this?

Regards,
Paul

Paul,

You present a decent case for it being Publisher's fault, but the truth
is, if your posit is true, this would affect hundreds of users. The
highest likelihood is that it is something related to your system or
setup. Wish I had a solution, though.

If it were a Publisher problem, then the Intel tech should have been able to
reproduce the issue.
I would suggest that something on your system is conflicting with either the
drivers or with Publisher in some way.

Just in case there is some quirk going on, you might try changing your
default printer and/or updating your drivers for the default printer.

I too am having this problem and I'll bet I have a different video card &
drivers than the rest of the people having this issue. That tells me it's a
MS Publisher issue. Everything was fine until the 1st of Jan 2005. I can't
see images even in old pub files that previously worked. This sucks to have a
publishing deadline and have this problem out of the blue.

Not necessarily. Publisher is picky about video drivers. I too had an issue
until I found updated drivers. My problem was a bit more challenging tho in
that the card manufacturer (Voodoo) sold out before I had the problem. I had
to find third party drivers. Worked like a charm - even upgraded to Pub 2003
since then. Smooth as China silk. :)

JoAnn,
I bow to your wisdom. I went out and installed updated video drivers and
voila! Works like a charm . May all your ones and zeros align forever.
Thanks a million.

Don't bow to me - I'm not worthy. Just pay it forward. :)

Ya know that's a thought! I'll try that. I will say that I now have a 256 MB
Raedeon PCI Express video card. I had to buy a 24-pin 500 watt power supply
to power the dang thing as well! Do you think that solved my troubles ...
heck no! I'm going to solve this yet! When I do I'll let everyone know what
the issue(s) was.

That was it Ed! It seems there was a conflict with the Adobe Acrobat 6 print
driver! You Da Man Ed! All that work and toil and blood preassure for
nothing! Oh well, I needed a new video card anyway (was a good excuse to give
to the Mrs to buy it with tax return money!).

Thanks again Ed and pay attention everyone ... this could happen to you too!

Paul
