Importing Windows PST files

Sam Brown

Is there a way to trick entourage into thinking a windows pst file is a mac
pst file? I see I can import an old entourage pst, but not a windows one,
and I have a pst file on windows that I've had for 10 years.

BTW, I find it interesting that in Windows there are options for importing
other file formats - so ms thought through the migration issue, but on the
MAC, there's no way to migrate to it. Silly microsoft. Tricks are for kids.

Hi Sam!

This is a highly requested feature, but unfortunately only Outlook can
use PST files.

First, please be sure to let Microsoft know you'd like to see this
feature in future versions by using the Help --> Send Feedback mechanism
in any Office application.

Then, have a look at this page on the Entourage Help Page for several ideas:

"Convert Mail from Windows to Mac"
<http://entourage.mvps.org/cross_platform/win_mac.html>

We've also had a couple of blog posts about this as well:

"Importing from Outlook for Windows based PST to Entourage"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/08/importing_from_outlook_for_win.html>

"Use an empty Exchange profile to open PST files in Outlook 2001"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007...eader_migrates_from_outlook_to_entourage.html>

Hope this helps!

Another point scored for the MS MVP team. Another disqualifying penalty for
Microsoft.

I just worked with a switcher to transfer the categories set in Windows to
Entourage and have not had time to post the info.

1. Export as .csv file. (Creating each category as a separate csv file might
make it easier to assign a category in Entourage.)
2. Import into Excel.
3. Save the name of the categories to one of the unused custom fields for
contacts.
4. In Entourage you can add columns under View in the menu bar. Add
the custom field you used and then sort by the column view. Select all
contacts for that category and assign a category.

Hi Diane..

I'm another user struggling with transferring PST to Entourage. The CSV way does not take care of some contact items like the picture. I have a big database of my clients data and photos that I wish to transfer to Entourage.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Massimo,

I am not sure if the .vcard file format stores pictures, but I think it
does. Also, Entourage imports it quite beautifully, but the disadvantage is
that Outlook has a longstanding history of not implementing the .vcard
format (either properly or at all).

Contact pictures are an area that is notoriously conducive to headache and
frustration, as most programs do not know how to transfer them properly. I
am not aware of any way of transferring them from one machine to another;
the only solution would be to manually re-assign them to your contacts in
Entourage, which is extremely tedious and repetitive, so you may not want to
do it in the end.

Hi Michel,

It's a real shame that Microsoft can't deal with this matter. Nokia Outlook sync utility does the work perfectly well. All contact photos appear on my Nokia phone. Even Blackberry doesn't make it right!!
I'm really frustrated...

Ha! I feel your pain! The only hassle at all in my move to a MAC has been
realizing that Microsoft has my data by the balls, so to speak.

I should have realized that with the ipod experience, when I came to
understand that MP3 was the only format that neither Microsoft or Apple
could hijack and lock me into.

Data should be independent of the device or program. Period.

100% agree with you. I appreciate that Entourage has consistently
followed open standards such as archiving mail in .mbox format or
archiving contacts in vCard format.

I'd really like to see the Database go away and all content be readily
accessible in a format that other applications can exploit. The
possibilities would be pretty cool.
