Input Text Field in Tables

Here we go again! It seems upgrading a popular program is almost a necessity.
I am using Word 2000, part of the Office 2000 Professional Suite. I recently
ran a suggested upgrade and now the input text fields in a template are non
responsive. Orginally in the table there were little gray boxes where I could
type in responses to the questions above, now the little gray boxes have text
in them formatted as such {FORMTEXT} and are unresponsive. Is this some sort
of coding error? I also notice any hyperlink I had in other documents became
{HYPERLINK mailto:. . . . .}.
I was able to restore the hyperlinks by simply erasing the {} but it doesn't
work in the table, nothing can be changed and most of the commands are not
responsive in word in these files. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

A new bit of information:

The form opens just fine in safe mode but does not open in regular mode and
does not save in regular mode.

OK, so I'm impatient. I figured out if I erase the Word folder from the
registry it will reinstall.

I did that an now the form works.

I guess I need to be aware of updates corrupting the word registry, maybe
you folks at Microsoft need to be aware of it too.

The issue you are seeing is simply that you are seeing field codes insteadof
field results. It should suffice to press Alt+F9 (which toggles them) to to
clear the box for "Field codes" on the View tab of Tools | Options (which
accomplishes the same thing). The only tricky part of this is that you can't
do either one from within a protected form. It is not an issue of a
corrupted Registry or corrupted anything.

I agree with Suzanne. What you encountered wasn't due to corruption or an
update. You accidentally turned on the view of field codes, perhaps by
pressing Alt+F9. You can't press Alt+F9 to toggle them off if you are
viewing a protected document which is why it didn't work. When you recreated
the Word key in the Registry you reset Word back to some of it's defaults
and the View Field Codes (Alt+F9) option is off by default and why things
are now "working" correctly. :)
