Installer Clean Up

T

Tommo

When I try to run detect and repair etc in Office XP standard, I get the
message 'this patch package could not be opened etc'. I also cannot run my
Office CD without getting the same message. I have down loaded the Windows
Install Clean Up facility, but am scared stiff to use it in case I totally
mess up my programmes.

Is there another way, or can someone help me please?

Thanks a lot

Run the program - it will remove rogue registry entries and let you
completely reinstall your Office program.

Like Milly said, go ahead and run it. I've used it numerous times for
testing purposes and never encountered any difficulty.

It won't mess anything up and will enable you to rectify the problem.
It was designed to correct the issues you are currently encountering.
All it does is remove the Windows Installer information in the
Registry and any installation files for the application you select.
This will allow you to reinstall the application which will create new
corrected Windows Installer info and files and allow access to Office
setup.

Just select Office XP only and then reinstall Office XP.

OK, it's not that I don't believe you, but I have no confidence in myself not
losing Office altogether.

I can see how to remove the registry entries using the Clean Up utility, but
how do I then reinstall Office XP? I didn't install it in the first place.
I bought the package and my computer shop did it for me. I have the disk,
but when I put in in the machine I get messages about it not working because
patch packages could not be opened or are missing.

So if I use the clean up facility on Office XP, do I then have to reinstall
from the disk, which I think is not working?

Will I lose Excel & Word, cos I have masses on there?

If I do a system restore before I start, would I be able to get back to
where I was?

Thanks

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

Using the Windows Installer Cleanup WILL allow you to install it. If you
are too uncertain as to how to do this, then take the machine back to a
repair technician.

Most people here presume that when you are given correct advice, you are
capable of taking that advice and acting on it. Standing by the door and
asking if you should open it after being told it is perfectly safe is not
what we are here to constantly tell you to do. Either do it or not.

If you select not to do it, then take it back to a computer shop, PAY them
the money to do what you could have done on your own, and then have THEM
reinstall Office XP.

There really was no need to be so downright rude! I simply asked a few
questions to try to get some confidence. We were not all born with a vast
knowledge of computers, and I doubt you are an expert in my professional
field.

I take great offence at your reply and think an apology is in order.

Oh FFS!! Stop *WHINGING*! There was nothing remotely "rude" about it. Suggest
you either grow a thicker hide (to match your head) or quit posting to
Usenet. She merely suggested taking it to someone more confident if you
weren't.

What are you - a professional whiner?

We're sorry that we can't come to your home and press the keys on
your keyboard for you. We're sorry that we wasted our time
trying to help an ingrate like you. We're sorry for the
profession that you're supposedly a member of. We're sorry that
you're such a freakin' pansy. There you have it... the apology
that is in order... no hard feelings? Don't go away mad, just go
away.

I realized you need a bit of hand-holding initially which is why I
backed up Milly's first response, confirmed I have personally used it
numerous times, provided details on how it works and how the Cleanup
utility was designed specifically to rectify the issue you are
currently encountering. In the past when folks were faced with the
same dilemma there really wasn't a good solution.

I'm not sure how much additional reassurance you are looking for - you
got quite a bit of it already. ;-)

If you're still uncertain then perhaps you should take Milly's advice
and hire a computer tech to do if for you. But then I also need to
re-emphasize another point she made and that is it's senseless to pay
for it because it really is something you can do yourself.

Okay, here is my apology.

I am sorry that you feel so inept as to not be able to take the advice of
seasoned professionals to run the utility. Additionally, I am very sorry
that you have so little confidence in yourself that you need to repeatedly
ask "should I, no, really, should I, no really?" And, in addition, I am
sorry that you are incapable of searching groups.google.com to see the vast
number of questions exactly like yours, where the poster ran the utility,
were up and running again (posted their thanks) in less time than this
thread spanned.

I am also sorry that I ever bothered to respond to your post. It will not
happen again.
