Interdependent MS Project Files - on MS Project Portfolio Server ?

E

ewillig

I am looking to setup several disparate MS Project Files for separate
engineering disciplines which have tasks dependencies between them.
Q 1: Is this possible?
Q2: Do I need MS Project Portfolio Server to do this?
Q3: If I do, and I have installed MS Project Portfolio Server on our server,
how do I then associate these project files to this server and create the
relationships desired?

Thank you, in advance, for taking time to enlighten me – Eric Willig

Eric,
Here are the answers to your questions:
- Q 1: Is this possible?
[Marc] generally yes, you will need to create a master project to do so.

- Q2: Do I need MS Project Portfolio Server to do this?
[Marc] No, Portfolio Server has nothing to do with this, if at all, you may
want to use the abillities that Project Server has to offer.

- Q3: If I do, and I have installed MS Project Portfolio Server on our
server, how do I then associate these project files to this server and create
the relationships desired?
[Marc] You wouldnt use Portfolio Server to do so. Portfolio Server is a
planning and optimisation solution for executives that need to plan
portfolios > programs and projects to meet strategic goals of an
organisation. the managing of the projects, once they run are done in Project
Server.

You may want to have a look on the microsoft site to see what Project Server
and Portfolio Server have to offer for organisations. This may make it
clearer to understand what each tool is made for.
Hope this helps

Hello Marc,

Thank you for such a quick response. I have created a master project and
have several project files within it and that works. What I cannot seem to
do is enable a task from within one of the individual project files (which is
inside the master file) to create a dependency to a task from another
individual project file (which is also within the master file). Does that
make sense? What do I need to make this happen? Thanks again Marc - for
your time. Eric

Hi Eric,

try to expand your Project and then Highlight the 2 tasks ( by using your
CTRL key). Then click on the link icon and the 2 tasks should link with
eachother
Hope this helps

Thank you Marc. - I was thrown because I normally create these relationships
directly into th Predecessors column when in the Gantt View and since it
references the task by row number and the row numbers start over with each
embeded project plan I was lost.

When I create a link your way it still does not appear to show up in the
detailed task view. Is clicking on the link line itself, after you have
linked the tasks in the manner your described, the only way to define the
type of relationship?

Thank you again Marc,

Eric
