Is there a format for typing occasional letters ? Not for office .

My wife wants to be able to write a letter on occasion and send it to a
friend, or make a copy for mailing, but we don't know how to do it. Is
there a program for this ? My computer is only a few months old, but I guess
the trial time to use Office has expired, so since this is not for an office,
what is available ?

Hi Thomas-

Take a look in Start>Programs (or All Programs)>Accessories and launch
WordPad. Not as full-featured as Word, but for the needs you describe it
should be quite sufficient.

If you computer is new (sounds like it) you should check to see if you have
Microsoft Works, which very often comes with new PCs and includes Microsoft
Word, or Corel/WordPerfect Office which includes WordPerfect. There are
either free or included for a nominal charge. Word and WordPerfect are
word processing programs. They offer a lot more functionality than Word
Pad, including such mundane things as printing your envelopes for
correspondence. Word is also part of Microsoft Office, which costs
significantly more and typically included Outlook (e-mail client, address
book, contacts) and a spread sheet. I think the WordPerfect Office suite is
similar but I have no experience, this being a forum for Microsoft
Office/Word..

The Works word processor would be adequate for typing letters, but Works
does *not* include Word. Works Suite does, along with Works 8, Encarta 2005,
Money 2005, PictureIt! Premium 10, and Streets & Trips 2005. See

I stand corrected. For one brief dark moment years ago (I made the mistake
of letting Dell load it on my PC) I had Works Suite before I ripped it out.
Never understood (or cared much about) the distinction between Works and
Works Suite.
