Joining two pictures into one and saving

We have two separate pictures that we want to join into one, fitting side by
side and not overlaying each other. Then we want to save the resulting image
as a file in the Windows Explorer so that we can use them as a unit.

Can we do that in Publisher and if so, how, or do we need another package?

You can do it in Publisher, although it's a task better suited to an
image editing package.

In Publisher, import the images, resize them such that their effective
resolution is 300dpi (Graphics Manager tells you this), select them
(drag a box, or click one, hold Shift, and click the other),
right-click, Save As Picture. Change the file format to an appropriate
one and the resolution to 300dpi, and Save.

===================================
Publisher can do it but the freeware IrfanView
is much easier for edge to edge joining.

Download Irfanview
http://www.techspot.com/download299.html
(get the plug-ins too)
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/472-irfanview-plugins.html

After installing IrfanView...open it and
go to...Image / Create Panorama Image....

Choose horizontal or vertical.

Click the Add button and browse to the
images you wish to join. Select the images
and click Open.

Click the Create Image button.

The joined image will appear in the main
view window.

Now all you have to do is save it.

File / Save As...

Choose a save location and a format...

Save...
