keyboard keys don't appear when typed in word

My friend just called me with this problem. When he types in word some of the
alpha keys don't appear in word and on the internet when he has to sign in to
sites. I have never seen this before. I told him to get a new keyboard. Any
other ideas as to why this would happen?

I've seen a number of keyboards fail in recent months, so that'd be the
first thing I would suggest as well.
