keyboard not functioning in Word

My computer has been working fine until all of the sudden the keyboard will not function in Word. It functions in spreadsheets, on the web, but I cannot type a new document or make changes on a existing document. I have a Windows XP with Microsoft Office Suite with Word. When I pull up word, it does not state what version it is. Help!
