Levelling is non-sensical

I have a very simple schedule drawn up.
* 100 activities
* Four resources
* No constraints
* No deadlines
* No actuals

After leveling, using any and all of the possible leveling orders, one
resource has 34 hours work assigned on one particular day.

Did you check the "Level only within available slack" option ?
What setting did you choose for the "Look for overallocations on a ...
basis" ?
